Blood is a fluid tissue composed of blood cells (corpuscles) and fluid inter, cellular substance called plasma. The total volume of blood forms about one twelfth of the body weight which is about 05 lits. About 55% of the blood volume is fluid and the balance 45% consists of blood cells. Plasma is made up of the following
Water : 91%
Protein : 8% (albumin, globulin and fibrinogen)
Salts : 0.9% (Calcium, iron, phosphorus, sodium chloride etc.)
Balance : (glucose, fats, cholesterol, urea, uric acid, creatinine and amino-acids)
Blood is formed in the bone-marrow. Soft tissues found inside the long bones are of spongy type. There are three types of cells in the bone-marrow :
(A) White blood cells (WBC) - Known as leucocytes which act against infection. The normal value of wbc is 4,000 to 11,000 per cubic- milliliter of blood.:
(B) Red blood cells (RBC) - also known as Erythrocytes. RBC contains haemoglobin rich in iron. Normal value of RBC is 4,500,000 to 5,000,000 per cubic milliter of blood.:
(C) Platelet or thrombocyte Megakaryocyte is a primitive cell found in bone-marrow. It eventually forms blood platelet and is essential for blood clotting mechanism. Normal value of platelet is 1.50 Lakhs to 4.50 Lakhs per cu mm.:
Leukaemia is called blood cancer where the cells are many immatured, uncontrolled and abnormal in the blood and over produced in the bone-marrow. T.L.C. counts are high and RBC, platelet are decreased. This disturbs the normal condition of the blood. Leukaemia may either be Acute or Chronic.
1. Acute Leukaemia : WBC count is found low below the normal value in the blood and other cells are raised in bone-marrow. This condition is generally found in children. Symptoms found are high fever, anaemic, frequent infections, haemorrhage and ulcerative lessiens in the mouth, nose, or teeth. If untreated, the illness is rapidly fatal.
2. Chronic Leukaemia : Apparently no serious symptom appear. It is of two-types.
(a) Granulocyte or Chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) : low fever, fatigue or tiredness, loss of appetite and enlarged spleen. Generally, patients of age 40 to 60 years suffer from it. CML is commonly diagnosed when the blood tests are carried out for some other purpose / disease. At the initial stage, no symptom appear. WBC or platelet may be high.
(b) Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia : It is found at a later age of above 60 years. Main symptoms of the patient are enlargement of spleen, liver or of lymph glands pertaining to armpit, throat or the back; Tiredness and low fever. It is important to know that WBC helps to prevent from infection, RBC is red in colour due to the presence of haemoglobin, and platelet patch up wound or injury by clotting system.
